Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show. Today we’re studying a video called:
Want to see Bon Jovi live?

I think this is a pretty funny video and also a clever and entertaining way to make a point. The video’s made with Xtra Normal – that’s a pretty cool site where you can make your own animated videos. And it’s made by a Bon Jovi fan and it’s about how expensive and difficult it is to get tickets to Bon Jovi concerts.

For example: You will have to pay $50 for the Bon Jovi fan club membership, just for the privilege of buying the ticket.

And: If you want to be front row you will also have to queue outside the stadium for four nights before the concert.

The person who made the video wrote this in the description: All we ask is that the band, the management and Backstage With Jon Bon Jovi will not take advantage of our crazy undisputed loyalty.

Take advantage of is an idiom which means: to make use of sb/sth in a way that is unfair or dishonest.

For example: He took advantage of my generosity.

So I think the point that they’re trying to make is that the fans are very loyal and will do anything to get tickets, so Bon Jovi shouldn’t take advantage of this and charge them more than a fair price.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora this is Stick News. According to news reports some people are worried about the latest Barbie doll which has a camera inside her chest and a screen on her back.

Barbie is a doll which has been made by an American toy company since 1959.
The latest doll is called Barbie Video Girl and comes with a built in video camera.
Apparently some experts are worried that the camera could produce some inappropriate content.

And that was Stick News for Thursday 4 November.
Kia ora.

Look, Mum! I gave Barbie a haircut.
Lovely.

MUMMY! TOMMY HIT ME AND I HAVE EVIDENCE!
Oh, crap.

And this is Mummy playing with the postman.
Gasp!

Word of the Day

Today’s word is blue-collar.

Blue-collar is an adjective which means: connected with people who do physical work in industry.

So if you work in a warehouse, moving boxes around, then you’re a blue-collar worker.
And if you work in an office, moving pieces of paper around, you’re a white-collar worker.

One of the characters in today’s video says they love Bon Jovi because they’re “a true blue-collar band.”

I guess this means that a lot of their songs are about blue-collar workers, so a lot of blue-collar workers enjoy their music. For example, Livin’ on a Prayer is about a couple called Tommy and Gina who are both blue-collar workers and who are struggling financially. Tommy used to work on the docks and Gina works in a diner.

Question Time

We filmed today’s question time when we visited a mountain in New Zealand called Ruapehu. We talked to some of the people working on the mountain, and we asked them:

Where are you from?

Um, I’m from England, in the Midlands, a little town called Tamworth.

Um, I’m from England originally.

Ah, I come from Argentina, yeah, from a city that’s in the middle of Argentina. The name is Córdoba.

From Palmerston North, just a bit south of Mount Ruapehu.

I live right here in Ohakune.

Ohakune is my home.

Turangi.

Ah, Manchester, England.

Want to see Bon Jovi live? - Transcript

Hello, I would like to buy a front row ticket to a Bon Jovi concert.

What’s your budget?

$1000.

For a thousand dollars you can buy a last row ticket on the upper, upper tier.

But I want to be front row.

You will have to pay $50 for the Bon Jovi fan club membership, just for the privilege of buying the ticket.

I don’t care.

You will have to buy a ticket through a fan club presale.

I don’t care.

The presale started yesterday at 8 and sold out at 8:01.

But I want to be front row at a Bon Jovi concert.

So you will have to buy an overpriced package which includes nothing but the ticket, the plastic bag and a reserved (?) VIP toilets where available. And it will cost you three times the price of a regular ticket.

I don’t care.

After you buy the non-refundable, overpriced package, the pre-sale will start again.

I don’t care.

If you want to be front row you will also have to queue outside the stadium for four nights before the concert.

I don’t care.

You will have to sleep on the sidewalk in a tent.

I don’t care.

You won’t have any decent toilet to pee in for four days.

I don’t care.

You will have to sit in the rain covered in garbage bags.

I don’t care. I want to be front row at a Bon Jovi concert.

They will write a number on your arm and put you in a list.

I don’t care.

They will open the gates and you will have five seconds to find your space in the front row while fighting the 300 Jovi crazy fans.

I don’t care.

They will push you.

I don’t care.

They will pull out your eyes.

I don’t care.

If you get to the front row you will be so exhausted you will fall asleep in the middle of Sleep When I’m Dead.

I don’t care. I want to be front row at a Bon Jovi concert.

Fine, give me your $1000. You are now an exclusive member of Backstage With Bon Jovi and have a bounce package with a diamond circle ticket to the Bon Jovi show at the community centre in Antarctica.

Thank you. Thank you so much. You have made my dreams come true.

If I may ask, why do you want to be in the front row at a Bon Jovi concert so much?

I love them, because they are a true blue-collar band.

Idiot.
