Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show. Today’s movie is called Predicament.

This is a New Zealand movie that’s just been released in New Zealand. And I’m not sure if it’s going to be released in any other countries or not.

I haven’t seen it yet. But from the trailer it looks pretty good. And the main reason I want to see it is because it has Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords in it.

Predicament is a gothic crime comedy. It seems to be about blackmail and murder.

A group of guys take a photo – or maybe pretend to take a photo – and they use that to try and blackmail someone.

They ring the person they’re blackmailing and say: If the judge sees this picture, you could get five years in the slammer.

The slammer is slang for prison.

And the title of this movie, predicament, means: a difficult situation.

a difficult or unpleasant situation, especially one where it is difficult to know what to do

So, at least one person in this movie is in a predicament.

STICK NEWS

A 43-year-old lawyer entered a canoe and kayak race in Kansas in the United States.
A short way into the race, he had to pull out after he was hit in the head by a 13-kilogram fish.
News reports say the fish are known to panic and jump in response to passing vessels.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 31st of August.
Kia ora.

POW!

They killed her.
I know, honey, but killing them isn’t going to bring her back.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is dough.

Dough is a mixture that you use to make stuff like bread.
And it’s also slang for money.

This is a line from the trailer for predicament: I need the dough, I’ve got nowhere to live.

I guess he’s talking about the money that they’re going to make from the blackmail.

Some other slang words for money are: dosh and moolah/moola.

And one that’s only used in New Zealand, as far as I know, is: pingas.
