#1205 Beyond Words, Might, Google Leaves China, Witty

Show 1205 Tuesday 23 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a short film called Beyond Words.

This film has very little dialogue, so I think you’ll find that it’s quite easy to follow the film even if you can’t understand everything that they’re saying.

It’s a thriller and I think the editing’s really interesting.

One of the main characters can’t see and the other one can’t hear and the editing switches between the perspectives of those two characters.

Let’s have a look at some of the language.

Part of the film takes place at a yoga class and you can hear the voice of the teacher saying:

Hi, my name's Holly. Today we're going to run through dynamic (something) yoga class. (I can’t catch what the name of the class was.)
If anybody has any injures, can you please let me know before we start.

To run through means to perform, act or practice sth – you could replace it with do.
And let me know means tell me.

This is a line from towards the end of the film, a guy says to a girl: I think you might have dropped your keys back at the gym.

This is a good example of how to use the word might.

Might is a very common and useful word, it expresses possibility, like the word maybe.

Here are some examples:

I might go out tonight, but I haven’t decided yet. I’m not sure if I can really be bothered going.

It looks like it might rain.

She said she might come over tomorrow, so we can talk about it then.

STICK NEWS

According to Wikipedia, there are more than 30,000 internet police in China who sensor anti-government content.
In 2006, Google launched a version of their site based in China and agreed to censor the results.
Recently, they changed their mind. They decided to redirect Google China users to the uncensored site based in Hong Kong.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 23rd of March.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is witty.

Witty basically means: clever and funny.

Witty people are clever and cool. Hang out with them.

And the reason why I chose this word today is because someone left this nice comment on YouTube recently.

Your stick news has such witty social commentary. Keep up the good work!

Thank you.
