#971 Yes, Satan?, $1 Flights, Worst Ski Lesson Ever, Snoop

Show 971 Tuesday 17 February
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying another scene from the movie Ace Venture: Pet Detective.
This scene is near the start of the movie when he arrives home and his landlord talks to him about rent.

It’s a pretty funny scene and there’s some useful language to learn.

If you ever say hello to the wrong person when you answer the phone, or maybe when you’re opening the door, you could say: Oh, I'm sorry, you sounded like someone else.

As soon as is also a useful phrase to remember.

Ace says to his landlord: As soon as I find this bird, you're paid!

You could say something like this to your boss: As soon as I finish this, I’ll start working on it.

And one more thing. Ace’s landlord says to him: Just don't let me catch you with an animal in here, that's all!

Don’t let me catch you basically means don’t do something because if you do it, you’re going to be in big trouble.

Kia ora in Stick News today an Australian airline is selling flights in New Zealand for $1.

Jetstar Airways is a low cost airline based in Melbourne, Australia. The airline is about to start domestic flights in New Zealand. To promote the new service they offered cheap flights for a limited time. What’s been your most disastrous lesson so far?

I have to say last year, um, I was just teaching children last year and we had school groups that would come over. So we’d have a … an instructor would have a group of say nine or ten children for the week. And I think my last … my worst disaster last year was when I had one of my students, um, fall on her last day. And she, um, she claimed of a very sore neck and couldn’t move. And so we … you know, panic set in and we had to fly a helicopter out to … have her, you know, sent off to hospital. And we were pretty concerned about it. Um, but we actually at the, at the end of the evening when everyone was having their disco, she’d just got some ice down her neck and she’d just got cold. So, we’d sent out the helicopter and there was this worry for, for nothing in the end. But, that’s, that’s kids for you.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is snoop.

v. informal, disapproving
to find out private things about sb, especially by looking secretly around a place

There’s an American rapper called Snoop Dogg.

But I think his snoop is short for Snoopy, not because he snoops around.

Landlord Ventura?

Ace Yes, Satan? Oh, I'm sorry, sir. You sounded like someone else.

Landlord Never mind the wisecracks Ventura. (cough) You owe me rent!

Ace Mr. Shickadance, I told you, you're my first priority. I’m on a very big case right now. Check this out. Look at that. That’s a true albino pigeon. Some rich guy lost it, he’s offering a 25,000 dollar reward. As soon as I find this bird, you're paid!

Landlord I heard animals in there Ventura! I heard 'em again this morning, scratching around.

Ace I never bring my work home with me, sir.

Landlord Oh, yeah? What's all this pet food for?

Ace Fiber. Wanna take a look inside? Come on. Come on! Go ahead. Snoop around! Well … are you satisfied?

Landlord Just don't let me catch you with an animal in here, that's all!

Ace All right. Take care now. Bye-bye, then. Looser.
