Sunday Kitchen #125 Eho-maki

In Japan, on the third of February people throw beans or peanuts to scare away the evil spirits.

But that’s not all. If you want even more good luck you can eat some maki-zushi facing a certain direction. This is called eho-maki.

Lucky direction roll.
I thought I’d give it a go.
So I made some rice.
Then I mixed in some vinegar.

I don’t know if it matters what goes in the eho maki … but natto was pretty much all there was in the fridge, so I decided to use natto.
I put some soy sauce and shichimi in the natto and mixed it up.

I’m sure I used to have one of those sushi rolling things but I seem to have lost it so I used this table mat and some glad wrap. Then I went and looked up on the net to find out which way the nori goes … shiny side down apparently. I haven’t made sushi for ages.

And it didn’t turn out very well. This is probably why I never make maki-zushi.

Hmm, anyway, I found this at the supermarket and it said the lucky direction this year is east north east so I faced that direction and ate it.

It was pretty messy … so it better bring me some good luck.
