#938 Marry Me, Man Impersonates Son, Confess, Favourite Books

Show 938 Thursday 15 January
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

The video I recommend today is a short Australian film called Marry Me.

I think it's a great film for beginners to study because it's really easy to understand and there isn't
much dialogue. So even beginners can understand it without much explanation.

There are two terms that you might not be familiar with:
A flower girl is a young girl who is part of a wedding procession – they usually walk in front of the bride, carrying flowers.

And do you know what training wheels are?
If you don’t, watch the movie and you can easily see what they are.

In the Acadia Report today two people were asked the question: What’s your favourite book?

The Acadia Report

Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada

My favourite book is the Bible because I know how much God loves me. And I want to proclaim his word to other people, especially those who do not speak English … as well as do speak English.

My favourite book is William Falkner’s The Sound and the Fury. I studied this book in university and I really, really like the story, I really like the characters, they were very realistic. And I think I’ve read it probably five times.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora in Stick News today a 54-year-old Japanese man has been arrested after he impersonated his son and took a test in his place.

A man in Nara runs a company that distributes medicine. In August he passed an exam to get a licence to handle the drugs.
He wanted his son to work with him.
His son needed a licence too – so the man thought he’d help his son by taking the test for him.
According to news reports, the man put on glasses and straightened his hair in order to look more like the picture on his son’s ID card.
While taking the exam he tried to make sure the examiners didn’t get a good look at him, but one official noticed he looked much older than the photo on the card.
The man then confessed and apologized.

And that was Stick News for Thursday the 15th of January.
Kia Ora.

#586 What’s your favourite book?

Step 1: Repeat Pauly’s lines.
Step 2: Read Pauly’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Pauly What’s your favourite book?

Sarah Um, I don’t know about my favourite, but one book that I really liked was: The Bonfire of the Vanities.

Pauly Is that a New Zealand book?

Sarah No, American.

Pauly What’s it about?

Sarah Um, it’s about … well, it’s a long story and it’s been a while since I read it. But it’s something about a car crash and what happens after that.
