Show 695 Monday 7 April

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Back in Show #585 I introduced The Daily English Show membership plan. So, if you missed that, go back and check out that show if you’re interested.

It’s basically a way for people to help support The Daily English Show. So thank you very much to the people who have already become members. We really appreciate your support.

I haven’t really done much with the membership thing since then because I’ve been so busy over winter working - on The Daily English Show, of course, and also doing other work.

But anyway, spring has come, and now I have more time to spend on this, which is exciting, I have a lot of ideas.

The first exciting thing is this: Sceen Magazine. I had to wait for a while for it to arrive – but, it has arrived now, and I have some extra copies to give away, which is cool.

This is a magazine about stuff like VJing, DJing, art, demoscene, gaming ... it’s a kind of arty, geeky magazine. I’m probably not explaining it very well, but it’s very cool, there are lots of interesting articles and some very cool pictures and there’s a picture of me on page 6, so it must be good, right? It also comes with a DVD and stickers. You can buy it too – it’s about 10 euros.

Anyway, I have three copies of this to give away. So the first three people who become members and say they want a copy of this, then I will send it to you.

Also, somebody suggested that for giveaways I sign the Stick News drawings and give them away. And I think that’s a great idea. I still have all the drawings here – because I didn’t want to throw them away, because they actually take a while to draw ... even though they probably look like they don’t ... and they’re all in folders, like this.

See, this one is September 2006. And every show is in a different plastic sheet. Like this one is Show 121. It’s so funny looking through the old folders, because my drawing has changed quite a bit.

So anyway, everyone who becomes a member by the end of April can choose one set of pictures from one show. And I’ll sign them and send them to you.

But wait, that’s not all! As if that isn’t exciting enough, your Stick News pictures will also get sent to you with a Daily English Show stamp. Wow. How is that possible? Well, it’s just a service that Japan Post provides. But it’s pretty cool eh? I got these made a while ago when they first started doing it. As you can see it’s the old photo that we used to use, so this is definitely a limited edition, we won’t be getting any more made like this. So, until these run out, you will get a Daily English Show stamp. And your life will never be the same.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a prison guard in the United States became romantically involved with a prisoner and helped him escape from prison.

This 24-year-old woman used to work at a prison in Kansas.
She became romantically involved with one of the prisoners and last November she helped him and another guy escape.
They were arrested a few days later.
She’s now back in prison – this time as an inmate. She has been given a five-year prison term and has to pay an $11,000 fine.
Her mother says her daughter now realizes there wasn't anything real in the relationship.
“She also feels like one of the world's greatest fools.”

And that was Stick News for Monday the 7th of April.

Word Of The Day

This is today’s word: machinima.

It comes from the words machine and cinema. And apparently it’s pronounced ...

I first learnt this word when I was working on this magazine. I was doing some editing and I learnt a lot of new words ... like machinima.

From what I can gather – basically by reading the Wikipedia entry - machinima is making a film or a short film, using computer games. As opposed to other animated movies when you use other techniques.

Does that make sense?

Anyway, you can go and read the Wikipedia entry if you want to find out more.

Apparently, the first machinima film came out in 1996 and it was called Dairy Of A Camper.

Sarah No.

Bobby Oh. So ... how did you get them made?

Sarah It’s just a service they provide. You send them an image and they send you the stamps.

Bobby Are they more expensive than normal stamps?

Sarah Yeah, a bit more expensive. But not that much.

Bobby How much?

Sarah Um, I can’t remember actually. Maybe 10 yen per stamp.
