Show 671 Friday 14 March

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show. Today song I recommend to study today is called Ice Ice baby by Vanilla Ice.

I recommend the song because I think it’s a classic. And if you like it too then maybe you’ll have fun studying some of the lyrics.

The song came out in 1990 and it was very cool for a while and then it wasn’t.

This is the second sentence of Vanilla Ice’s Wikipedia entry:

He found major mainstream success, but his success lasted only about one year, and his rapid fall from popularity remains one of the most notorious in American music of recent decades.

Poor Vanilla Ice. But I like Ice Ice Baby ... mostly for the nostalgic value, but anyway, let’s check out some of the lyrics.

The song starts like this:

Yo VIP let's kick it
Ice ice baby
All right stop, collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention

I think the theme of the song is basically how great Vanilla Ice is – how great his music and his rapping skills are.
And he conveys this with various metaphors. Like how he’s so great he’s dangerous ...

I'm killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly, when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony

Dope is a slang adjective for great. For example: The Daily English Show is dope.

A felony is a crime in the United States – a certain kind of crime. So he’s saying that it’s a crime or it’s very bad to play music which isn’t of the very highest quality.

And he throws in some more similes later on when he continues to tell us about his fabulous DJing (I mean rapping) skills.

My style's like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel

Interesting. Don’t know if I’d really want my style compared with a chemical spill ... but maybe he just really needed a word to rhyme with feel.

And finally a few more similes to share with you:

Shay plays on the fade slice like a ninja
Cut like a razor blade so fast other DJs say damn
If my rhyme was a drug I'd sell it by the gram

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, several Indian film stars have been barred from the United States for participating in a visa scam.

Today Reuters reported that Indians wishing to emigrate to the United States have apparently been paying film industry figures to pretend to hire them to work on shoots in the US.
They enter on a temporary visa and then stay on illegally.
On Tuesday an actress in India was arrested in connection with visa fraud. A broker and a bogus applicant have also been arrested.
And around 200 people have been given a life-time ban from receiving US visas.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 14th of March.

friday joke

A man asks a woman: "Am I the first man you have ever loved?"
"Yes, of course," she answers. "Why do men always ask the same question?"

Ice Ice Baby
by Vanilla Ice

Yo VIP let's kick it
Ice ice baby
Ice ice baby

All right stop collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention

Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop yo I don't know
Turn off the lights and I'll glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle
Dance go rush to the speaker that booms
I'm killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony

Love it or leave it you better gain weight
You better hit bull's eye the kid don't play
If there was a problem yo I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice ice baby vanillla
Ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla

Now that the party is jumping
With the bass kicked in and the vegas are pumpin'
Quick to the point to the point no faking
I'm cooking MCs like a pound of bacon
Burning them if you ain't quick and nimble
I go crazy when I hear a cymbal
And a hi-hat with a souped up tempo
I'm on a roll and it's time to go solo
Rollin' in my 5.0
With my rag-top down so my hair can blow
The girlies on standby waving just to say hi
Did you stop no I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I busted a left and I'm heading to the next block
The block was dead Yo so I continued to A1A Beachfront Avenue
Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis
Rockman lovers driving Lamborghinis
Jealous 'cause I'm out getting mine
Shay with a guage and Vanilla with a nine
Reading for the chumps on the wall
The chumps acting ill because they're so full of eight balls
Gunshots rang out like a bell I grabbed my nine all I heard were shells
Falling on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car slammed on the gas
Bumper to bumper the avenue's packed
I'm trying to get away before the jackers jack
Police on the scene you know what I mean
They passed me up confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem yo I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice ice baby vanillla
Ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla

Take heed 'cause I'm a lyrical poet
Miami's on the scene just in case you didn't know it
My town that created all the bass sound
Enough to shake and kick holes in the ground
'Cause my style's like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel
Conducted and formed
This is a hell of a concept
We make it hype and you want to step with this
Shay plays on the fade slice like a ninja
Cut like a razor blade so fast other DJs say damn
If my rhyme was a drug I'd sell it by the gram
Keep my composure when it's time to get loose
Magnetized by the mic while I kick my juice
If there was a problem yo I'll solve it
Check out the hook while the DJ revolves it

Ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby (oh-oh) vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla
Ice ice baby vanilla ice

Yo man let's get out of here
Word to your mother

Ice ice baby too cold
Ice ice baby too cold too cold (x2)
Ice ice baby

Trevor (from today's snow report) owns a skatepark in Methven (near Christchurch, South Island, NZ) called The Shelter. I couldn't find a website (I don't think they have one) but I found this interesting article about a guy who skates there.
This is a good Japanese page about shops in Methven - scroll down and you can see an entry for The Shelter.
Here are some photos of Trevor snowboarding.
