Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s guest is Cassie. She’s from Melbourne, Australia and she’s been in Japan since the start of last month. She works at Saison Club. I asked her why she came to Japan.

Came over for a working holiday, to go snowboarding and learn about Japan and the language.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a 16-year-old boy from Melbourne, Australia made the national and international news after he threw a party when his parents were out of town and hundreds of people turned up.

Corey Delaney is a teenager from Melbourne who loves his yellow sunglasses.
Last weekend his parents were away and he decided to have a party.
Apparently quite a few people turned up and caused a bit of trouble in the neighbourhood.
Today the BBC reported five hundred drunken teenagers had attacked police during a wild party in the Australian city of Melbourne.
They said police were forced to retreat and await reinforcements after they were attacked with rocks and bottles.
Corey was interviewed on an Australian TV program called A Current Affair, where the TV presenter tried in vain to get him to take off his yellow sunglasses.
The video has become a hit on YouTube with thousands of views and comments.
People have described Corey with words such as: idiot, tool, loser, moron, tosser, hero and legend.

mgrauvel Once again ACA hits a new low! Too funny!!! Kid's a legend even if he is a tool. :)

Turtle1971 Bad on him for being a dick in the first place. Good on him for standing up to crap journalism.

anonleft That was hilarious. "Take off your glasses" indeed. Who does she think she is?He's a little shit, but the last answer was gold.

And that was Stick News for Monday the 14th of January.
Kia Ora.

THE SNOW REPORT
on Hanazono #3

with Chris from Perth/Melbourne

Where are you from?
I’m from Australia too. From Perth originally but I’m living in Melbourne now.

How long have you been staying here?
Oh, I’ve been here with Ryan for 5 days. We’re here for 6 days.

Which mountains do you usually go to in Australia?
Well, same as Ryan, Mount Hothem and Mount Buller, because I’m in Melbourne and they’re the closest.

What’s your job in Australia?
Ah, investment banking.

How would you describe today’s conditions?
Fantastic. Lots of fresh powder snow. Ah, visibility is a little bit poor. Ah, as Ryan said, it’s a little bit windy, but, ah, yeah lots of nice fresh stuff between the trees. So, ah, we’re going to get out there and enjoy it.

conversations with sarah
#369 How did you hear about Niseko?

Step 1: Repeat Sarah’s lines.
Step 2: Read Sarah’s lines and talk to Cassie.

Sarah How did you hear about Niseko?

Cassie Through friends who had been here before. They said it was really good. Great powder. So, yeah, I wanted to come and check it out.

Sarah How’s work going?

Cassie Yeah, really good, we only ever work breakfast or dinner, so plenty of time for riding and ...

Sarah What do you think of the snow in Niseko?

Cassie Oh, it’s great. It’s amazing. So much powder, every day is great.

Sarah What do you do in Australia?

Cassie Um, I go to uni, study outdoor education.

Sarah What are you planning to do in the future?

Cassie Um, well I’ve got two more years in my course. And then hopefully head back overseas. Find a job. Yeah, keep travelling for a couple of years.

Sarah Where would you like to go to next?

Cassie Ah, maybe Canada.

Sarah Could you speak any Japanese before you came here?

Cassie Um, like, I learnt a little bit in primary school, couldn’t remember any of it, but a little bit came back to me when we got here and we’ve been trying to learn at work.

Leila McKinnon: Well, it's the real-life Risky Business - a teenager hosts an alcohol-fueled party for hundreds of kids, while his unsuspecting parents are on holiday. Sixteen-year-old Corey Worthington is now facing not only the wrath of mum and dad, but a twenty thousand dollar fine from police. I spoke to him a short time ago. Corey, thanks for joining us. The only question that I can think to ask is: What were you thinking?

Corey: Um ... I wasn't, really.

L: Did your parents say you could have a party?

C: Um, no, they didn’t.

L: So, why did you?

C: Um, I dunno. It was just a get-together with a couple of mates at first, and then we thought, we might as well just have a bit of a party, and then it sort of just got out of hand, and ... yeah.

L: Well, 500 people turned up, the air wing of the police force, the dog squad, your neighbour's cars were being destroyed. What have your, ah, parents had to say, Corey?

C: Um, I haven't really talked to them, because every time they call, I don't answer. Cos, yeah. They'll probably try to kill me.

L: So, that's a short term strategy. You're going to have to talk to them eventually. What are you going to say?

C: Um. Sorry.

L: Are you sorry?

C: Ah, yeah, yeah, I am.

L: You don't sound very sorry.

C: Well, I can't be exactly blamed for everything that happened, because it wasn't in the house, it was out in the street, and I didn't do it, like, the police said "You stay inside, so you don't get in trouble", so I did do what he said. So ...

L: Why don't you take this opportunity now to apologise, to your parents, and to your neighbours, who have said today that they were frightened.

C: Well, I've already offered - I've already offered like to say sorry to them and stuff when I see them, so ... I will say sorry now for everything that happened, and ...

L: Why don't you take your glasses off so we can see you? And then apologise to your neighbours for frightening them.

C: Mmm. Nah. Nah. I'll leave these on. Nah, I like them.

L: They, they might be fined twenty thousand dollars. Are you going to try and pay that for them?

C: Yeah, but I don't think it's fair they'll be fined it, because what happened - it was my party, but it could of just been any random person walking in the street doing it. It happens all the time.
L: Your parents were out of town, you put out the invitation, you started it. Why don't you make a grown up decision now and accept responsibility? Take off those glasses, and apologise to everybody that you frightened, to the police who were forced to retreat and whose cars have been damaged, and to the community who have had to pay for this? Take your, take off your glasses and apologise to us.

C: I'll say sorry, but I'm not taking off my glasses.

L: Why not?

C: ‘Cos. They're famous.

L: Because your glasses are famous?

C: Yep.

L: Why are your glasses famous?

C: I dunno - everyone likes them. So I dunno. I'm not takin' 'em off.

L: You're pretty happy with the way you look, and the attitude you've got, are you?

C: Yeah. My parents aren't, but I am.

L: OK Corey, we've got to wrap this up. But what would you say to other kids who were thinking of partying when their parents are out of town?

C: Get me to do it for you.

L: Get you to do it for you. Not, "Don't do it."

C: Yeah. Nah! Get me to do it for you. "Best party ever so far", well that's what everybody's been saying, so ...

L: Well, we've got to go. But I suggest you go away and, ah, take a long hard look at yourself.

C: I have. Everyone has. They love it.
